Caroline Furnace has been richly blessed by the faith, wisdom, foresight, effort, support and sacrifice of those who initiated it, and supported it throughout its life. This ministry has been an extension of the life of the congregations and their members for nearly 50 years. Many leaders in the Christian community look back to this place as instrumental to their call to positions of leadership in the church. As we celebrate 50 years of ministry at Caroline Furnace, we look to the future with a three-year capital campaign and a goal of updating our facilities. Our primary goals are to improve the restroom facilities and provide additional indoor meeting space. The first phase of the plan calls for a combination of new construction and renovation of Moyer Lodge. We have been blessed by generous donations of money and services to the 50th Anniversary Capital Campaign, but we have more work to do.
Updated, Moyer Lodge will continue to meet many of these same needs, but in new ways. The leaking roof is being addressed with a new roof. Some of the roof joists and boards that have been damaged by the ongoing leaking are being replaced at this time. In addition to the roof, the bathrooms will be repurposed, removing the showers (in favor of a separate shower house) and retaining a limited number of toilets in the Lodge. There are changes planned for the kitchen, infirmary, camp store and the counselor information area. Walls and spaces will be shifted and expanded to better utilize the Lodge space.
The Upper Room is a multipurpose meeting room that will be located steps from Moyer Lodge in the Cabin Village. It will have a flexible interior that will allow of one large room, with seating for up to 120, or three small rooms. It will also have restrooms, a coffee bar and a refrigerator. At this time, we do not have "break out" meeting space for groups to use. This will provide space for that and for multiple groups to be able to come and stay, with separate meeting areas. The Upper Room will be a huge addition to our ability to meet the needs of those who are interested in bringing groups to Caroline Furnace.
We plan to build a separate Shower house. The Shower house will also be located in the Cabin Village and will provide our users with a much needed updated bathroom and shower facilities.
There are eight cabins in our Cabin Village. Currently each has a large propane furnace located in the center of the cabin.. We intend to replace these outdated furnaces with newer, smaller and more efficient furnaces. This will both improve our ability to heat each cabin as needed and add floor space in the center of the cabin. Additionally, we have replace some cabin windows but many still need to have insulated window to improve their use and function. Finally, we plan to finish the drywall projects on those cabins that still have not been completed. A single road through the interior of camp will allow us to use one main entrance into camp which will improve both our hospitality and our security. The road will pass from the main entrance on Camp Roosevelt road, past the office, offer a spur to the Retreat House and shop and head over the creek and up the hill to the work circle at the Lodge which will become a parking lot. This will keep cars away from areas where campers are living and walking and close the back entrance onto camp. The Retreat House was the original camp building. It has been office, dining, main kitchen, staff house and has housed many who have come to Caroline Furnace over the past 50 years. It serves as an ideal location for youth group retreats, staff retreats, council retreats and more. Our plan is to replace the windows with more efficient double pane glass, and add vinyl siding on the outside of the building. This will reduce maintenance and utility costs. A high ropes course instills trust and problem solving behavior in a group, and provides self accomplishment and builds self esteem in an individual. It will be a great addition to the Low Rope challenge course that is already available on camp.
An endowment will provide the annual income necessary for the maintenance and upkeep of the additions and renovations. One of the ongoing challenges of a non profit is managing the UNbudgeted items, like sudden repairs. The ability to keep on top of, rather than react to regular maintenance will be a blessing for this ministry and avoid the major costs that come with emergency repairs. |
