Buttonwood Lodge at Signal Knob Farm
Our Adult Retreat Facility in nearby Strasburg VA
7610 Strasburg Road Strasburg VA 22657
Buttonwood Lodge was built in 1983 by a retired chaplain of Roanoke College who felt that some of his most meaningful work happened while on retreat with his students. Upon retirement he designed and built this retreat center on his family farm, created with adult groups in mind. Also known as Signal Knob Retreat Center, this space was established to be a place apart in the beauty of the Shenandoah River and Massanutten Mountain, for groups seeking spiritual renewal in the Christian faith and opportunities to live out a more just, caring and peaceful lifestyle. Since it's beginning, Buttonwood Lodge has been a Christian retreat ministry for ecumenical adult groups, with ties to the Virginia Synod of the ELCA (now also the Metro DC Synod and West Virginia-Western Maryland Synod). Caroline Furnace now cares for the Buttonwood Lodge and continues the ministry that began many years ago.
Excerpt from Rev. D. John David Keister, "Pat":
"I have a dream! When I feel I have finished my work at Roanoke College, I would like to establish a retreat and renewal center on the beautiful farm in the Shenandoah Valley which I inherited from my father.
The purpose of the retreat and renewal center would be to provide an environment where persons could experience closeness to nature, a simple lifestyle, and opportunities for contemplation and prayer, reading and study, and conversation and fellowship with kindred spirits. There would be no structured programming although facilities would be made available for church groups which would bring their own programs. The center would seek to serve pastors and church leaders who need rest and renewal. Encouragement has been received from many quarters in the Virginia Synod and in the Lutheran Church in America."
