Meet our Staff!

Julie Kroll

Director of Sales, Marketing & Communications

Julie is a graduate of Brevard College with a degree in Wilderness Leadership and Experiential Education, and minors in Environmental Studies and Natural History.

She is a certified North Carolina Environmental Educator

(a 200 hour certification). Julie has an extensive background in outdoor education, an eye for detail, and a passion for creativity. After 3 years on staff as our Out-trip Coordinator, she now works to connect with new user groups and to guide each new group in personalizing the perfect retreat for their participants.

Lee Ann Powell

Director of Food

Service Operations

Lee Ann deeply believes that food is love shown tangibly. She has shared her love and talents  with many meals, for groups both large and small.

She is devoted to the craft involved in creating a meal, from building menus and honing techniques, to practicing food safety and making sure there is plenty to go around. Paired with Lee Ann's 20 years as a special needs teacher, her passions for outdoor ministry and hospitality shine through in her work.

Bryan Hepner

Director of Facilities & Maintenance

Bryan has an extensive background in fixing things and lifting heavy stuff. His skill set includes carpentry, landscaping, plumbing, electrical, and more.

Bryan is excited to use his gifts and abilities to improve the experiences of all who spend time in this place. He looks forward to sharing his knowledge and faith with others.

Camp Dog

Pinella loves belly rubs, snuggles, fresh carrots, and running around in the field. She quickly becomes best friends with all of our campers and retreat guests. She is a 10 year old rescue, and her people are Tom and Lee Ann.

Tom Powell

Executive Director

Tom joins us as past president of the Board of Directors, a parent of former campers and a counselor, and a very active member of the Caroline Furnace family.

He has a vibrant faith, deeply rooted sense of hospitality, and a solid background in organizational structure, property care, and building relationships. His experiences as a Sunday School teacher, youth advisor, congregational council president, and Boy Scout leader are supplemented by his professional background of 20 years in the National Guard and 12 years in the consulting industry.

Tom describes this role as his "dream job". While you're here, ask about his slag dance!

Rev. Heidi David-Young

Director of Resource &

Program Development

Heidi served as a member of our Board of Directors and a Summer Camp Chaplain before joining our staff. She and her husband met during seminary on a trip to Israel. She is on leave from call and regularly serves as a supply pastor in the Shenandoah Valley.

Heidi brings many gifts to the team and is skilled in resource development, grant writing, donor relations, and retreat planning, in addition to the spiritual gifts that come with being a rostered leader.

LuAnn Woodard

LuAnn specializes in accounting, payroll and human resources, and has nearly 20 years of experience. She loves the Shenandoah Valley where she calls home. When LuAnn isn't at Caroline Furnace, she's busy caring for her husband, dogs and horses.

Camp Dog

Pico's favorite things are the lake, the Shenandoah River, and his camper friends. Pico belongs to Julie, and came from a family of campers and camp counselors. He is living the dream, with 257 acres to run on when we're between rental groups.

Camp Dog

Cassidy lives with the Hepner family, and although shy at first, she loves making new friends! She can keep up with young, crazy Pico, or hang out under the pine trees and relax with Pinella. Cassidy loves naps, carrots, and jumping through the field, pretending to be a deer.
