Meet our Staff!

Tom Powell
Executive Director
​
Tom joins us as past president of the Board of Directors, a parent of former campers and a counselor, and a very active member of the Caroline Furnace family. He has a vibrant faith, deeply rooted sense of hospitality, and a solid background in organizational
structure, property care, and building relationships. His experiences as a Sunday School teacher, youth advisor, congregational council president, and Boy Scout leader are supplemented by his professional background of 20 years in the National Guard and 12 years in the consulting industry. Tom describes this role as his "dream job". While you're here, ask about his slag dance!

Monica Springman
Director of Programs

Monica's connection with Caroline Furnace began when she was a counselor in 2012. Monica grew up attending and working at many different camps all along the east coast. She has over ten years of experience in Camp and Retreat Ministries, and additional
experience in the care and education of children. She earned her BA in Wilderness Leadership and Experiential Education from Brevard College. Monica loves to share her love of the outdoors with others. She enjoys being outside in her hammock with her husband, Tommy, reading a good book, and throwing the ball for their dog River.
Melody Stachour
Director of Communications, Outreach & Guest Services

Melody comes to Caroline Furnace with a love of people, the outdoors, and the theological discernment and discussion. She fell in love with the camp during her visits for the BeerReformation retreat, and is

delighted to be part of this Found Family. She brings with her experience in inclusion advocacy, adult education, and people leadership over the course of her 21 years in the Navy Reserve and in consulting. She has served the wider church as a member of the Commission for a Renewal Lutheran Church and on her Synod Council, and believes in the transformative experience of sharing and caring for the Great Outdoors during her upbringing and leadership in scouting for over 30 years!


Bryan Hepner
Director of Facilities & Maintenance

Bryan has an extensive background in fixing things and lifting heavy stuff. His skill set includes carpentry, landscaping, plumbing, electrical, and more.
Bryan is excited to use his gifts and abilities to improve the experiences of all who spend time in this place. He looks forward to sharing his knowledge and faith with others.
Lee Ann Powell
Director of Food Service Operations

Lee Ann deeply believes that food is love shown tangibly. She has shared her love and talents through many meals, for groups both large and small.
She is devoted to the craft involved in creating a meal, from building menus and honing techniques, to practicing food safety and making sure there is plenty to go around. Paired with Lee Ann's 20 years as a special needs teacher, her passions for outdoor ministry and hospitality shine through in her work.


Lindsay Owen
Director of Summer Programs

Lindsay first started going to Caroline Furnace with her church growing up and has been a volunteer at summer camp for the past three years. She attended High Point University where she received a B.A. in Special Education, B.S. in Psychology, and an M.Ed in Elementary Education.
Lindsay has been a youth director for the past five years and loves sharing her faith with others. In her free time, she enjoys traveling, spending time outdoors, and running agility courses with her dog Lilo.

LuAnn Woodard
Bookkeeper
LuAnn specializes in accounting, payroll and human resources, and has nearly 20 years of experience. She loves the Shenandoah Valley where she calls home. When LuAnn isn't at Caroline Furnace, she's busy caring for her many dogs and horses.

Kirsten Ammons
Marketing & Communications Coordinator

Kirsten joined the team in summer of 2025 as one of our Marketing and Communications Interns. Growing up being active in her church, paired with her passion to be a servant of God led her to Caroline Furnace. She is excited to continue building her skills and sharing the camp's testimony through her new role while she finishes her studies at West Virginia University!

Pinella
Camp Dog
Pinella loves belly rubs, snuggles, fresh carrots, and running around in the field. She quickly becomes best friends with all of our campers and retreat guests. She is a 10 year old rescue, and her people are Tom and Lee Ann.

Charlie
Camp Dog
Charlie loves a good cuddle on the couch and will greet you with a wonderful tail wag! Charlie is a rescue, and his people are the Hepner family!

River
Camp Dog
River belongs to Monica and can't wait to meet you at camp in the summer!

Arrow
Camp Dog
Arrow is our newest camp dog and is a purebred AKC certified rescue that spent the first 7 years of his life as a breeder. He is very much a people person and loves to herd up humans and especially likes anyone that will scratch and pet his beautiful fur.
Arrow belongs to Tom, and Lee Ann.

Lilo
Camp Dog
Lilo is a rescued shepherd mix who belongs to Lindsay. She loves to swim in the lake and explore the creek! She can't wait to meet you at camp this summer and will quickly become your best friend if you throw her ball!
